Hearing Baby's Heartbeat for the first time

It's not unusual for couple who are having a baby to document every little aspect of their pregnancy. We've all met those who have, and perhaps we even fall into that group. Pregnancy has a way of making people curious and thoughtful, and they always want to be able to find out as much information as they can as soon as they can. There are countless different methods that couples try to see or hear their baby, but one popular and common method is listening to their baby's heartbeat.



Hearing Baby's heartbeat can be one of the most magical things about pregnancy. It's one of the telltale moments that makes the whole experience real for a mother and her partner. This is often one of the most anticipated parts of a pre-natal doctor's visit. However, there are some ways that you can listen to for your baby's heartbeat without needing to head along to the doctor.

A stethoscope is a common medical instrument. It is used for listening to the heart and lungs. It is a metallic instrument that consists of a large metal disc that is placed on the chest. A cable then runs up to the ears. Any sound is amplified through the stethoscope. While it's possible to hear an adult's pulse with relative ease, a baby's heart is much smaller, and beats much more quickly. Given that it's hidden deep within the mother's uterus, it can be nigh on impossible to hear without the assistance of medical equipment such as a stethoscope. If you want to listen to your baby's heartbeat using a stethoscope, you're probably best to start doing so at a time of around eighteen to twenty weeks. However, this will vary depending on a number of factors such as your baby's size, your maternal weight and size, and so on.

Using a stethoscope to listen to your baby's heartbeat is not a common method any longer. However, neither is using the pinnard horn. The pinnard horn is an old-fashioned device that used to be used for listening to a baby's heartbeat. The pinnard horn resembles a simplified trumpet. It works in a similar way to putting a cup to a door to eavesdrop. A midwife or other person will place their ear to the flat section of the horn, while the open section of the horn will be placed against the mother's stomach. The baby's heartbeat can then be heard.
